Numbers on the Dash
Faith keeps me grounded. The numbers keep me honest.
They say creative people cycle through depression. Some jolt snaps them out of it. I get down sometimes, more than I let on. But it never takes over. Faith keeps me grounded before it gets that far.
But grounded is not the same as coasting. When a challenge shows up, something I actually have to fight through, that is day one. I bought a pack of table cards, one through a hundred. Current day goes on the dashboard of my Gladiator. Every morning.
Not decoration. Proof I am still moving.
Same reason my Bible sits open on my desk before anything else happens. Not because faith needs a receipt. Because I do.
Effort. Result. That is what keeps people upright.
Every night when I get home, that card comes off the dash and goes somewhere safe in my office. Then I pull the next one for morning. And here is the thing nobody tells you about counting days. It was never about the digit on the dashboard. It is the pile in the office. The stack I can hold in my hand. That is what keeps me going. Not the one day in front of me, but every day behind me that I already got through.

[side-note] the one thing that has always boggled my mind about Calvinism. It just does not get that it takes a sincere heart, unprompted faith, and earnest effort to have a real relationship.
