They reflect
Children become what they watch, not what they're told.
Thirty years and six kids later, I've come to a realization. Children reflect what they see, not what they're told. They mirror how you live, not how you lecture.
Take a step back and watch quietly. You'll see it. If one parent loves and respects the other, the child learns to love and respect from what they saw. If one parent despises and questions the other, the child learns to despise and question from what they saw. The behavior gets passed down long before the words ever land.
Hindsight is always 20/20, and parenting sits right in that category.
My prayer for those just starting: get a deep understanding of Scripture and then live it. Not so your kids hear it. So your kids can mirror it. They become what they watch, not what they're told.
Shalom v'shalva.
